Year 11 Modules

Note: modules are based around the pre-2006 AQA syllabus.  You can use ctrl-F to find key words in this page.

Module 3 - Environment

Revise Ecology (includes the Nitrogen and Carbon cycles) with BBC Bitesize.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Global warming and Greenhouse Gases can be found at the EPA's Global Warming site. In particular, check out the animations on Global Warming, the Carbon Cycle and the Water Cycle.

For some general information about farming, have a look at What is fertiliser and why do plants need it, from How Stuff Works and how organic food works, also check out The GM Food Debate: food under the microscope (from the BBC).

Module 4 - Inheritance and Selection

1)  Visit Biologica's Web Labs, and play 'Dragon Genetics' and 'Mendel's Peas'.
2)  Go to Zerobio's Java Genetics section and try problems 1, 2, 6 and Drop & Drag Genetics.
3)  Have a look at this cloning timeline.
4)  Try cloning Mimi the mouse.
5)  Play the Cloning or Not? game!
6)  Find out about the link between genetics and addiction by investigating: The Case of Nicotine Addiction.

Finished?
- Explore the Genetics Learning Centre and try building a DNA molecule.
- have a look at the BBC's DNA50 section, all about the anniversary of the discovery of DNA,
- Are GM foods dangerous? Read the BBC's articles on GM Crops.

The Genetics Learning Centre is a really interesting site with loads of information. In particular, you can see the movie on DNA we watched in class.

From BBC Bitesize:
- Variation
- Inheritance (icludes genes and chromosomes)
- Adaption (predators and prey)

For reproduction and fertility:
- Photographs and commentary of the first 9 months of a baby's life (from conception to birth)
- Conception and fertilisation from the BBC (lots of animations).
- An interactive diagram of all the hormones produced in the human body.
- Animations and diagrams showing how hormones levels change during the female menstrual cycle.

Module 7 - Patterns of Chemical Change

This site contains lots of resources and a summary of the whole Patterns module.

Read about the reaction between sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid here:
GCSEScience.com - rates of reaction

Revise Rates of Reaction and Enzymes with BBC Bitesize.

Both of these things are produced using enzymes - find out more about:
- Making bread
- Making beer!

Revise Reversible Reactions with BBC Bitesize and explore this animation of the Haber Process (a reversible reaction).

Module 8 - Structure and Bonding

This site contains lots of resources and a summary of the whole Structure and Bonding module.

Periodic Tables:
Interactive periodic table from WebElements™ or try RSC’s Visual Elements periodic table
Download a Periodic Table to print off (use right click and Save Target As to save a copy).

Read about the History of the Periodic table.

Revise Structures of Materials with BBC Bitesize.

Have a look at Theodore Gray's website for lots of information about:
- The Halogens (group 7)
- The Alkali metals (group 1 - the sodium page has movies showing large quantities of sodium being thrown into a lake!)
- The Noble Gases (group 0, sometimes called group 8)

Revise: Groups 1, 2, 7 and 8 of the Periodic Table at S-Cool.
Try: A quiz on the Periodic Table in general

Try a crossword on the: Electrolysis of salt

Practice balancing equations with ChemBalancer.
Read all about how to balance chemical equations and try lots of online examples (may be a bit tricky - try it if you want a challenge!).

Module 11 - Forces

Learn about Position, Velocity, and Acceleration; a really clear explanation, and an activity which allows you to control position, velocity, and acceleration for two objects at the same time.

Simple explanation of Speed, Distance and Time graphs.

A useful animation of two runners running along a track with an accompanying graph.

Quiz from BBC Bitesize on speed, distance and time.

Look at these revision pages from BBC Bitesize on Space and try the test.

Learn all about how the Sun, Earth and Moon move at FearOfPhysics.

Read up about the Earth and Beyond at the: BBC Bitesize website
Then try the online tests on: the Solar System and the Stars.

All about comets:
- Use the BBC Comets page to find out exactly what a comet is
- Have a look at the BBC Comet Gallery for some really pretty pictures!
- Did a comet bring life to Earth? Read up and cast your vote.

Read about other bodies in the Solar System at the: BBC Bitesize website
Then: try the online test on the Solar System

Project Ruby Slippers:
The future of the Earth is in your hands!

Extra stuff on Space:
- Investigate the BBC's Space site: BBC Space
- In particular, try the: Solar System Jigsaw

Finally, go to the Planet10 website and: build a new planet!

Module 12 - Waves and Radiation

This site contains lots of resources and a summary of the whole Waves module.

Check out these interactive movies:
- Reflection
- Refraction (with explanation)
- Refraction (just an animation)
- The (colour) spectrum
- Total Internal Reflection

And there are some more, slightly more complicated, animations here:
- Waves hitting a barrier (and reflecting)
- Standing waves
- Reflection and refraction (total internal reflection)

Have you ever wondered why traffic sounds louder at night? It's not just because it's quieter in your house! This page explains what's happening... and this simple animation explains one of the ways diffraction can affect sound waves. There's also a really good animation showing how waves change as they pass through a slit.

Play with the Wave Lab and learn what waves really are.

Learn all about echoes (including sonar).

Look at these revision pages from BBC Bitesize and try the tests:
- Waves (includes diffraction)
- Radioactivity

You can also: Explore this page all about waves from S-Cool.

Try this: Matching exercise on types of radiation

Click on this link to visit the: BBC Bitesize section on the Electromagnetic Spectrum, then click on this link to: try the online test

This movie talks about the wave/particle nature of light. The diffraction bit at the beginning is very good; after that it gets a bit tricky, especially towards the end, but if you feel like a challenge you might like it!
